The Three Altitudes of Leadership in Corporate Environments
The Three Altitudes of Leadership in Corporate Environments
This Leadership Education Memo introduces a structural framework for understanding leadership responsibility at different organizational altitudes – from functional execution, to enterprise integration, to stewardship and governance.
The Three Altitudes of Corporate Leadership clarifies the distinct work, judgment, and contribution required at each level. It is designed to help boards, CEOs, and senior executives identify “altitude confusion,” align expectations across roles, and support effective leadership transitions without reducing leadership to personality, mindset, or style.
This framework was developed and refined through Lyceum’s Executive Assessment and Development work and is used to evaluate executive readiness for the next level of responsibility and to guide targeted development as leaders assume broader enterprise accountability.
This framework is particularly useful in:
- CEO succession and executive readiness discussions
- Board–management boundary clarification
- Enterprise alignment and execution challenges
- Diagnosing friction caused by leaders operating at the wrong altitude
This memo is intended as an educational tool. It is designed to be printed, shared, and discussed in boardrooms and executive teams as a common language for leadership responsibility and governance.
